Painting "Suspended Judgement"

I - pure and holy - the one
who throws stones at the guilty,
I am so righteous, so zealous -
look, my hands are calloused.

And you tell me that I made a mistake,
that you too stood in that pit,
that everyone was there: friends, loved ones, mothers, and fathers,
and I myself - in the first row.

And indeed - I was in the pit among everyone,
I was also the one who stood on the edge,
I was both the first stone,
and the victim, and the heartless judge,
and white innocence, dirty sin,
and the curse carried by the wind,
I was also the one who closed his eyes,
threw a stone and repented.

And hundreds of stones flew,
over Vilnius and over Bethlehem,
there were no saints or gods,
only the people I loved.

And when it all ended, we walked home,
underfoot - broken flowers.
But this time it's easier, because I warmed in my palm
an unthrown pebble.
