We Said Nevermore And Did It Again

 It was a beautiful summer evening, we came to nature, stopped on a hill, got out of the car and looked at the pinkish horizon. Women shared sandwiches, men uncorked drinks and life seemed wonderfully easy. We forget the tasks of the day, no matter how difficult, significant, or meaningless, and surrender to the pleasure of the moment. How good it is to just be.

We chatted about the past vacation, someone read a stanza of poetry, the women began humming a slow melody and our song wafted over the field.

Beautiful, we told ourselves.

And not far away, on the neighboring hill, stood a cross.

The eternal cross, it is always there, for so long that we don't even notice it anymore, it is like a part of the landscape - a stone, a tree, a thistle bush - blended into the environment and dissolved in it.

And what is there on the cross?

Yesterday, nothing seemed to happen, and now, wait - like what kind of person is hanging around?

You won't be able to see it from afar, and it takes too long to get closer, we don't have much time tonight, maybe we'll stop by next time.

Next time - if there is a next time.

Or if we are in the mood for it. Because I almost know what we will see there.

And it won't make you happy.

It won't make you happy, - oh, it can even spoil the evening's idyll, the song can no longer play, the wine can turn rancid, and sandwiches can burst in the throat.

- Do we need it? - we ask each other. - Why this painful, uncomfortable experience - after all, the day was already hard, now we need rest, laughter, sunset, calm horizon and some sweetness, dizziness. Light thoughts carry you as far as possible.

We turn away and sing beautifully again.
