A black horse, black as the sky, was waiting for her,

you couldn't even see him in the dark

it seemed as if the rider were flying through the air;

only flash narrowed eyes,

like a dagger wounding a careless heart,

and the rider disappears

leaving behind the scent of lilies.

She comes to our days through the heavy gates of eternity,

I see reflected in the dark pond

the red lily blooms, that flower shines briefly -

just a day or two, or a year, or a quarter of a century,

and then - gone.

Where are you, we ask, searching in the thick of the park,

but you can't find her anymore, she disappeared in the flow of everyday life,

and her heart went out - where is that light? -

you wouldn't even recognize her once you met her,

where is that shining dagger, where is that flower?

And at night another will come through that high door,

and will jump into the black saddle, and run among the trees of the park,

will fly on an invisible horse,

and another heart will be pierced by a burning dagger.

Many more red lilies will be reflected in the pond.

They will bloom for one night and one day.

But for you to see - oh, how beautiful!
